Chapter 34

For a mansion, Davenport’s ballroom was smaller than Scorpio had thought it would be, but it was one of the few homes in their town large enough to have a ballroom at all. There were possibly one hundred guests in attendance, which still seemed smaller than Scorpio thought for the parties she’d heard so much about. Scorpio was linked onto Rayner’s arm as he guided her into the ballroom among the wealthy, well-dressed men and women. Scorpio wasn’t a stranger to formal parties, since she grew up in a fairly wealthy household, although it had been some time since she’d attended such a party. She wore her black evening dress from the last party she attended, which was her and Kane’s high school graduation party. Both had refused a formal party for their college graduation. They’d opted for a cruise with their grandparents instead.

Rayner looked at home and handsome in his expensive, black suit. Scorpio was actually surprised at his expensive taste in suits, considering she hadn’t really seen him dressed up since he’d moved to their town. She couldn’t help but admire how adult he had been regarding dressing up and wearing a tie. Cal didn’t like dressing up, and he adamantly refused to wear a tie. Even Kane handled dressing up better than Cal had, probably because Kane was forced to wear suits growing up just as Scorpio was forced to wear dresses and high heels. It always made her grandmother happy to see them dressed up, so they did it without complaint.

Davenport saw them, appeared almost stunned to see Scorpio, and hurried his attractive wife across the room to greet them. He shook Rayner’s hand and immediately eyed Scorpio in her dress.

“I can’t believe you actually got a Wayland to attend one of my parties,” Davenport announced to Rayner with enthusiasm. “Scorpio, you remember my wife, Celine.”

Scorpio managed a polite smile and nodded at the attractive woman in the revealing dress. Her cleavage stood out, catching the attention of every man in the room. Davenport motioned to the neatly dressed waiter with a tray of filled champagne glasses. As the man approached, Davenport handed both a filled glass.

“I have so many people I’d love to introduce you to,” Davenport informed Scorpio. “My parties are the ‘who’s who’ of influential people from the city.”

She casually looked around then smiled at Davenport. “I recognize a lot of the people here from my grandfather’s last big party.”

“Well, we used to run in the same circles,” Davenport reminded her.

Rayner’s cell phone vibrated in his inner jacket pocket. He removed his phone, looked at the caller ID, and smiled with embarrassment. “Sorry, I have to take this,” he announced. “I’ll only be a minute.”

He stepped away to answer his call. Davenport was being flagged down from across the room. He nudged Celine.

“Darling, will you entertain Scorpio?” he asked. “I’m being paged.”

As Davenport darted away, his blonde, trophy wife attempted a smile at Scorpio. “How did you get roped into one of these boring parties?” she asked with little emotion.
